"Once upon a time in the not so distant past when the world was somewhat younger and a bit less jaded a young poet was browsing through the art books at his local library. While looking through these aforementioned books he came across a magnificent painting called "The Lady Of Shalott" by John W. Waterhouse. The look of innocence on the lady's face as her boat carried her to an unknown destiny captured our young hero's heart and mind. Sometime later the lady once again invaded the life of Steve Babb. This painting inspired Steve to write an epic poem entitled "The Lay Of Lirazel", a tale of love, of loss, of heartbreak and redemption. The poem later became the basis for the lyrical content for the Glass Hammer album entitled "The Inconsolable Secret", without a doubt one of the bands greatest works to date.
I first read the poem when the album was released a number of years ago and just dove into it once again. The thing that struck me about the poem is the absolute excellence of the writing. Secondly, I loved the feeling of adventure that I felt while pouring through the pages of the tale. As a rock n roll bass player, Steve Babb is flawless as a poet/ storyteller he is excellent.
It makes me hope fervently that "The Lay Of Lirazel" will not be a one time non-musical entry from Steve. As a storyteller Steve Babb ranks along with names like Stephen Lawhead or Jeffrey Overstreet.
